Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as Crit chance and damage from PvE.

For example an item with the upgrade template that is ending in % will take on 3damage to attack each time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be inserted into armor, weapons, and trinkets in order to provide an additional stat boost or effect while they're in use. Upgrade components can be placed in equipment with a slot for them; the item must be at least upgraded to the blue level for a component to be used. Infusions and Enrichments are type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascending equipment, as in some items that aren't ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be recovered by salvaging ascended gear or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A suffix or prefix can be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item it is used on (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, which allows players to create stronger versions of the equipment using the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than would be required to achieve the same level of upgrade using normal methods.

A boost upgrade can change the attack or defence characteristics of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades are available to be made from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed Mechanical. They can also be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear or by purchasing them from the cash store for 500 upgrade crystals each.

The player can have the maximum of five boost upgrades at a time; each upgrade increases the chance that a higher-tier version of the item will drop in the next reset. This gives players an incentive to upgrade their equipment even in the event that they don't know how much it will be improved following a reset.

The process of upgrading an item could be costly and it is likely that the item will be obsolete, or even break, in the event that the upgrade fails. Upgrade Crystals and assist powders are also destroyed when an upgrade fails. This is reduced by the availability of cash shop items to double or even eliminate possibility of failure, and some upgrades that offer the benefit of being reinserted into an item.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade components that can be placed in special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs increase the power of all nodes in their radius and include pre-existing affixes to equipment. Glyphs are upgraded in many ways. We recommend upgrading them as fast as you can to level 15.

The value of each Glyph is displayed when you select it from your inventory. You can replace it with a different Glyph of the same rank, or a higher rank, which will increase the overall value of the glyph.

Leveling

The item upgrading system allows players to increase the performance of certain items by placing upgraded components in them. This is known as "upping". Each upgradeable item has a level that determines its final upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum level of 385 ilvl. Each level of an item requires various components, and the cost of upgrading increase with each level.

Certain upgrades require an ingredient to be activated. This ingredient can be obtained by making Upgrade Recipes. These recipes are available in the upgrade tab of a crafting table or purchased from some NPCs. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed earns a number of Technology Points. These points can be used to upgrade the item. Once enough are earned, the upgrade can be claimed and any additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When an individual player upgrade a piece of equipment it will be replaced by a new item. The same armor will receive a weapon or a shield when upgraded. The new item will also have its own set bonus. This could be a drawback because it can make the item more expensive if you don't need it.

Failures can result in the item returning to its initial state which means that the player has to purchase more items than if they stopped upgrading after the maximum amount.

If an item is not able to upgrade, the amount of accumulated experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. The item also loses any bonuses it has gained, such as the chance to crit, attack damage, or other effects (such as an increase in healing over time or the speed of reloading). The player can continue to use their weapon or armor after the failure.

Whenever an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from the lowest to the highest. This means that when a weapon is upgraded, if it receives a crit chance boost that it will be applied prior to any damage to attack increases.
