The upgrade of an item upgrader allows players to boost an item upgrader's gear score up to 700, and then add an additional perk. Items can be upgraded if they are in your inventory and you decide to take them to the Kiln.

Certain items can be upgraded to benefit from their unique stats (like a perfectly rolled breakpoint armour used in melee PvP) while others like weapons don't change much post upgrade, and therefore aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

Upgrades to weapons can boost their numerical stats, like attack damage, crit chance, and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons come with a flat-rate bonus that increases damage per second. Many weapons also have an unaffected bonus that is activated when three or more identical weapons are equipped in a unit. This bonus may exceed the damage a weapon upgrade can do on its own.

A weapon's upgrade costs depend on the quality of the weapon and its current level. For instance the weapon with a +2 rating will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while the +3 model requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade the weapon will continue to increase until it is required to use the higher level of Smithing Stones, at which the amount will be reset to one.

Upgrades to weapons will also change the stats of their base. While this is usually an excellent thing however, it could have negative consequences too. In the case of items that are only used in a specific build (Whistant's shield for FB sorcs for instance), upgrading them may make them unusable unless you happen to have an extremely fortunate roll.

Armor items can be upgraded to boost their stats. In the case of chests or helms, this will increase its defense base while gloves and belts will improve their required strength and dexterity. Armor has a rerolling option for its Enhanced Defense percent. This means that it can sometimes reroll down to a lower value.

The upgrade template of a weapon will display the new stats it will gain when upgrading, along with the relative values of those stats. This means that an upgrade from a sword with 8 damage to an 11-attack-damage sword would result in a weapon gaining 33% attack damage. However the 3% does not mean that it will strike 3 times less often, since it is an absolute statistic.

A weapon can also be rerolled using the green button that has arrows that circle in the menu for items. The item will be rerolled and alter its stats, but not reset the weapon's level or bind it to account status.

Armor

A few tweaks to your armor can make an enormous difference in your ability to survive. Certain sets can offer massive increases in resistance to curses, poison fire, magic, and other. This makes it easier to traverse difficult areas. In general, the greater defense you can offer your character, the greater health you will gain from each point. Therefore, it is recommended to upgrade your armor.

To improve your armor, head to one of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. There are four of them, and each requires you to complete a special side quest involving the Stable Trotters musical troupe. After you've completed the main quest, and the corresponding fountains, you can talk to any Great Fairy in order to unlock the armor upgrade menu.

The amount of material needed to upgrade each piece of armor is different. You'll need anywhere from three Red Chuchu jelly and 10 Rupees to upgrade the first armor piece, and anywhere between five Rubies or 10 Fire-Breath Horns to upgrade the next one. The Champion Leathers, for example, can be upgraded to an increase of 5 defense rating, which allows you to keep up in frigid environments with a large group of adversaries. The Snowquill Headdress, on the other hand, can be upgraded as high as +20 defense, which means you're able to survive a battle with your friends.

It isn't possible to upgrade armor in the same way as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior it is best to focus on upgrading your armor for physical strength or the power of spells. You should also save your armor upgrades to upgrade the armor that you will still be wearing by the end of the story, like the Ring of Lightning, Spectral Shield or the mask you wear in the final boss fight the Monter Parts Merchant Mask.
