The performance of many Path of Exile items can be improved by upgrading them. They can be a great source of extra damage or more AD or even more affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is usually superior to modernized Common or Magic gear because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They increase the performance of the item upgrade they are connected to. Armor upgrades are available in the world of games and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. They can also be salvaged using a professional or higher salvage kits to salvage upgrades from the items.

The amount of damage that an armored item or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the degree of upgrades. The absorption of damage by an Item upgrader Kit of armor will increase as it is upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. However, it's important be aware that this upgrade item will increase its weight, which will cause it to weigh more than before.

There are several different types of armor upgrade available in the game. Each has a different impact. For instance, certain upgrades will give the armor a certain amount of health points while others will make it stronger and lighter. The name of the upgrade will tell you the kind of upgrade an item upgrader can receive, as shown below.

Some upgrades also feature magical or a combination of magic and technology, which is identified by an "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Furthermore, some upgrades require a fee to use, and are indicated by an "Charges" entry in the table below. These charges are either constantly updated or never expire, depending on the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest method to improve your armor. You can find it by exploring and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more expensive however, it is available from the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied on high-level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide a significant improvement in stats and are a worthwhile cost, especially for single-handed weapons.

The player should be aware, however, that upgrading a piece to its maximum upgrade level will boost its defense. However, it will also affect its agility and its speed. It is not recommended to upgrade items armor past +9. The boost in defense generally isn't worth the weight and power expenses of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to increase the effectiveness of specific aspects of the weapon. For instance an upgrade can improve the damage that is caused by shotgun shells or the accuracy of the sniper rifle. Certain firearms have enhancements to enhance their intrinsic qualities. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and minimizes overheating of the weapon) and Kinetic Coils (increases the speed of projectiles to cause more damage).

The majority of upgrades to weapons require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade. Instead, you're better off visiting stores and buying gear with low upgrade levels, but good base scores and stat distributions. These items will have a higher likelihood of granting you most prestigious tier of blessings and perks.

To increase their level faster, most players will prioritise upgrading their weapons. Additionally, players should consider upgrading the weapons favored by their teammates to make them more powerful as well. Shepard for instance, should upgrade the M92F so that he can unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more effective when used with biotic specialists such as Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are utilized in the sockets of armor and weapons, enhancing the stats of a weapon and providing additional effects. Jewelry crafting is a method of creating them. You combine the gemstone with specific reagents on a table. The higher the grade of the jewel the better the secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses in the world, or through salvaging Legendary Gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Prisms and gold.

The Jeweler can enhance the quality of the gem in stages that range from Crude up to Royal. The stat boosts can vary depending on the level the jewel is at when it is inserted into jewelry, weapons, or equipment.

The Jeweler can craft all tiers of gems, with the exception of rare and legendary ones, which you must be at an appropriate level to obtain. In contrast to other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped with another identical jewel without damaging the original one. However, you can only replace one jewel in an item of equipment once.

The use of more jewels in a movement will make it more smooth and is usually used to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. Jewels also enhance performance and create a harder surface than steel so that repeated friction caused by pivots does not damage them.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the appearance of your shields and weapons. These glyphs offer a small boost and can be freely swapped, but they are not guaranteed to show up as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also Scattered Crystal. Glyphs may also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis cannot be swapped out, and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are a great way to give your character a variety of small, but beneficial, advantages. They are available in the start-up area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They are also available through vendors and after completing road interaction. They can be purchased from the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinkets that a player is able to unlock is the cloak, which grants a small, but valuable boost to speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player can then acquire necklaces, amulets, and rings in a similar manner similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has an upgrade slot that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be placed in any type of equipment, however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and is only compatible with certain kinds of trinkets.

These trinkets also grant additional buffs and skills that remain active when the hero is not fighting. This allows the hero to perform better when they are not active and also helps fill in the void of a solid team or the absence of any talent tree slots which would normally be filled with hero's ideal statistics.

As a general rule trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best in Slot) items that you will not replace soon. Also, consider items that have desirable statistics are less significant than the iLevel for the item to be upgraded. This is especially true when you are looking to upgrade items multiple stats on an item. It is better to upgrade one important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.

In the beginning of the game, players in the jungle are likely to upgrade their trinket to a red in the middle and top players will usually opt for the pink or green ward (depending on the game's matchup). These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's map control abilities.

Apart from the items mentioned above, players can find other items in the form of awards and trophies. These can be obtained by completing certain milestones within the story, like completing a chapter's main quest or destroying a boss. These achievements can be seen by selecting the relevant achievement from the reward tab of the hero menu.
