Costs
There are a few costs associated with item upgrades. The first cost is the upgrade itself. It can also be expensive to upgrade an item to a better tier (such as Explorer > Champion, or Veteran > Heroic).
The second is the price of the materials required to upgrade. The items used are usually either Power Dices (dropped by monsters 21and up) or Minerals and Erons (obtainable through completing specific Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor quests). In some cases, the upgrade will grant additional perks that can be selected from a list of advantages.
In rare cases, the upgrade will only replace the highest-costing perks. The upgrader may also make other modifications to the item, like changing its weapon damage type or removing an operative or unwieldy feature. The cost for these modifications is based on the item's current ilvl and may require a specific material, such as an adamantine alloy.
