This characteristic can be utilized to study the role of prosody in different cultural contexts.
In the field of linguistics, the DCT is now one of the primary instruments for analyzing learners' behaviors in communication. It can be used to examine various aspects that include politeness, turn-taking, and lexical choice. It can also be used to determine the phonological complexity of learners speaking.
Recent research used a DCT as a tool to assess the ability to resist of EFL students. Participants were presented with various scenarios and asked to choose the appropriate response from the choices provided. In a recent study, DCT responses to student inquiries via email were compared with those from an oral DCT. The results revealed that DCTs preferred more direct and conventionally-indirect requests and utilized less hints than email data.
Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs)
This study investigated Chinese learners' pragmatic choices when it comes to using Korean by using a range of experimental tools, such as Discourse Completion Tasks (DCTs) as well as metapragmatic questionnaires and Refusal Interviews (RIs). Participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate proficiency who gave responses to DCTs and MQs. They were also asked to provide reflections on their opinions and refusals in RIs. The results revealed that CLKs are more likely to resist native Korean pragmatic norms. The MQ data was analyzed first to determine the participants' choices in practice. The data were classified according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, the choices were compared to their linguistic performance on the DCTs to determine whether they showed a pattern of resistance to pragmatics or not. One of the most important questions in pragmatic research is why learners decide to rescind the pragmatic norms of native speakers. Recent research has attempted to answer this question using various experiments, including DCTs MQs and RIs. The participants consisted of 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs, and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. Participants were asked to complete the DCTs and MQs either in their L1 or 프라그마틱 슬롯체험 L2. They were then invited to an RI where they were asked to think about and discuss their responses to each DCT situation.
The results showed that CLKs on average, did not adhere to the norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did so even though they could produce native-like patterns. They were also aware of their pragmatism resistance. They attributed their decision to learner-internal factors like their identities and personalities as well as multilingual identities. They also mentioned external factors like relational advantages. For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors facilitated a more relaxed performance in relation to the intercultural and linguistic standards of their university.
The interviewees expressed concern about the social pressures or consequences they could be subject to when their social norms were not followed. They were worried that their native friends would think they are "foreigners" and believe that they are unintelligent. This is similar to the concerns expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).
These results suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are no longer the preferred choice of Korean learners. They could remain useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests. Future researchers should reassess the usefulness of these tests in different cultural contexts and in specific situations. This will help them better understand the effects of different cultural environments on the classroom behavior and interactions of students from L2. Additionally it will assist educators to develop more effective methodologies to teach and test the korea's pragmatics. Case Studies
