How to Replace an audi etron key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are various pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. The good news is they are very cheap and readily available, especially if you're looking at a Bosch model, like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this component is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your vehicle.
