How to Replace an audi keys replacement cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The audi car key case will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've eliminated everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. If you experience any of these issues it is likely your sensor is going bad and requires replacement. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easily accessible particularly if you're looking at a Bosch unit which is what ours are. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for many problems in your vehicle. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points.
