1. Roomba Q5 Pro
The Q5 Pro and its sibling, the more expensive Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've tested. They have motors that are top-of-the class and can handle up to 5,500 Pascals. And, like other top iRobot models (including the top-rated model) they employ intelligent mapping technology to create precise floor plans and eliminate common obstacles like cords and furniture legs. They also feature carpet boost that boosts the robot's performance when it detects the presence of dirt on the carpet to get it cleaned quickly.
The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests on floors that were bare and are especially adept in cleaning dog hair. They do have some flaws however, which hinder them from being our first option. One of the Q5's shortcomings is that its navigation system doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's thus susceptible to get stuck on socks and shoes and could not navigate rooms with lots of people efficiently during our tests. It also doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of the room.
Still, it's very good, especially if you want to save money on a Roomba from iRobot, and you have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and can work when you're at work or at school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle, however. If you're required to, the mopping pad can be changed for a wet one in just a few seconds.
2. iRobot Roomba X30
The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact sleek and stylish vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to mop floors. Its flex arm is ideal to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It's not as effective on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.
During testing, X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop to clean an entire home, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It did a great cleaning job on various flooring and rooms with different flooring types including certain area carpets. Its obstacle detection was superb, and it avoided fake dog turds, socks, shoes and bundles cables.
It's more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically fills up its base, and supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after it vacuums it, something we've not seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

This is thanks to the combination of high-tech sensors, including a structured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it boasts the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.
As with other iRobot models, the X40 is easy to use, offering an intuitive mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's a noisy unit that could be a problem if you run it in the morning before work or at night as you try to fall asleep.
It's also quite expensive, though it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are similarly capable and look better. If you're willing to live some more volume and a little more cost this is a efficient two-in-one device that should satisfy most people.
iRobot L20 Ultra

For families that are busy, a recharge function and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off could be very beneficial.

The RX3 is more sophisticated than the price suggests. It is a good vacuum cleaner, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad, which uses an oscillating motion that is cleaner than the other robot vacuum with mop mop cleaners we've tested. It's also highly self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and a self emptying base that is washable.
The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, arrange an area for cleaning or to prioritise your dirtiest rooms to ensure better performance. The app also provides access to many features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.
