Then, the responses were matched with their linguistic performance on the DCTs to determine whether they showed a pattern of resistance to pragmatics or not. The interviewees also had to explain why they chose an atypical behavior in certain situations.

They attributed their decisions to learner-internal aspects such as their personalities, multilingual identities, and ongoing life histories.
